The retail giant Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

In a significant move, Walmart has begun enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can buy during one shopping trip. This new rule officially takes effect as of early November, based on a company memo distributed to employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced significant criticism for allowing the large-scale transaction to proceed.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. However, the language has sparked debate due to its vagueness. Precisely what counts as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Moreover, since the limit is based on individual trips, in theory an eager reseller could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate significant stocks throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. In recent years, scalpers have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, while others search for valuable pulls that can fetch extraordinary prices. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed for over $800 in online marketplaces.

Looking Ahead

The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the ongoing demand and potential reseller attention.

With any luck, the retail limits will help reduce bulk purchases and improve availability for true fans and casual players as well.
