Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their mission for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—an event that could contain the secret to his downfall for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a child version of Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points this season, the truth about the mine shaft incident is detailed in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is understood of Brenner's work, the case most likely held vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the container could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to become stronger.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict that awaits.
