The Divinity Developer Details Its Application of AI Tools for Upcoming Divinity

The studio behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently teased its new project, creating immense anticipation within the gaming community. However, recent statements from the company's figurehead have introduced clarity to the conversation, focusing on the team's stance toward AI tools.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new statement, Swen Vincke explained that the developer is using machine learning for specific ancillary tasks. These include developing PowerPoint slides, generating rough concept art, and writing draft dialogue.

Notably, Vincke stressed that the shipping material in the game will be crafted entirely by actual artists. "Our team is writing every line manually," he affirmed.

Larian is actively increasing our team of storytellers and are busily putting together dedicated writer rooms.

Since concept art is being specifically mentioned — we right now have 23 artistic staff and have roles to fill for additional artists.

Everything we do is supplementary and aimed at having people spend additional energy on actual creation.

Every AI system implemented properly is additive to a creative team routine, not a replacement for their talent.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The news of using AI initially sparked backlash among portions of the player base. In response, Vincke issued more detail on online platforms.

"We use machine learning to research ideas, just like we use search engines and art books," he stated. "In the conceptual planning process we use it as a basic framework for composition which we then replace with original artwork."

He added, "Our studio recruits talent for their inherent skill, not for their ability to follow what a AI generates."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had previously outlined the studio's practical approach to AI and ML, categorizing its use into key pillars:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes refining animations, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to rapidly prototype simple mock-ups of gameplay ideas to validate concepts ahead of expensive development.
  • Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how AI could in the future facilitate innovative player agency, especially in managing unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.

He specifically affirmed that central narrative disciplines — including music composition — are not areas where the company is cutting creative involvement. On the contrary, Larian is expanding its staff in these very roles.

"Our studio is neither releasing a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not looking at reducing staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
