The Chainsaw Man Film Leads Domestic Cinema Earnings in Opening Weekend
Can Sony claim to have repeated their success? In the wake of the triumph of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed more than $600 million globally, the latest Chainsaw Man film has surpassed the hundred-million-dollar milestone globally, reaching a global total of over $108 million during its debut. The film beat out Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its sophomore frame in theaters, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring actor Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Impressive Domestic and International Results
The work of filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a straightforward follow-up of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It earned over $18 million domestically after a powerful $5.2M Saturday box office and $4.5M Sunday. Globally, the MAPPA-produced film added $14.7M across 46 international territories, resulting in a global sum of over $60 million under Sony ($43.1M overseas, $18.2 million domestic). The studio has not yet revealed its final earnings figure.
Parallels to Previous Anime Hits
Promotional firm an industry expert noted in prior discussions, comparing the feature's anticipated earnings to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed thirty-four million dollars in the U.S. and Canada in the year 2022 and debuted with a similar eighteen million dollars domestically. The new film's first weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar international sum currently tracks just behind that movie's $166.6 million total earnings. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will match the earnings seen by smash success Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for the studio.
Promotional Efforts Boost Success
Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have successfully utilized audience interaction to propel their supremacy at the cinema for anime films. The movie's promotional efforts launched at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in July with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, followed by a major presence at the New York Comic Con featuring behind-the-scenes footage, audience giveaways, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and influencers alike after the concluding day of the event.
Looking Ahead
This year marks a big year for anime, and for the company, which has one more feature-length anime debuting in 2025 in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
