Stupidity and Regal Arrogance Sunk Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet

The saga started with a single photograph, possibly the most impactful ever captured of a member of the monarchy.

In the frame appeared the Duke of York, with his arm around a teenage girl, while another individual beamed conspiratorially in the background.

Without that snapshot, shot at a party in 2001, who would have believed the assertions of a adolescent who declared she was trafficked across the Atlantic and forced to have cursory relations with a individual of the monarchy?

An odd, revealing move by someone who had publicly asserted to have no known about her, claimed he could never have had sex with her, and yet handed over millions of monarchical money to resolve a long-delayed court action.

A Long Period of Scandal

In this context, discussions of the royals acting decisively to cut Andrew off are inaccurate. This controversy has endured for the majority of 15 years since that image, and an additional image of Andrew strolling congenially with a notorious individual emerged.

  • Self-importance: How long did his siblings, maybe even his relatives, know that Andrew was so presumptuous?
  • Dubious Friendships: They must have understood, if his aides and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some highly questionable companions given he publicly hosted them to estates.
  • Financial Extravagance: If the household did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his overspending with taxpayer funds.

Trips were documented in royal annual reports: private aircraft flights from the estate to a golf course and back again in time for dining, private flights instead of scheduled services, all for the convenience of "the frequent flyer".

World of Deference

Then there was the arrogance which demanded respect when he appeared in a area or the profound awareness about his honorifics used on his letterheads in messages to his associates.

He avoided accountability while his parent, who inexplicably indulged him, was still surviving. The sovereign did at least strip him of public duties and military positions in the aftermath of his catastrophic and, it is now clear, deceptive television interview six years ago.

Current Situation

Merely in the last two weeks that events progressed rapidly, following the publication of accounts giving more troubling particulars of his conduct and that of his connections.

More information have again highlighted Andrew's thinking that he could avoid lying about his relationship with a notorious figure.

People (and the media) were far more perceptive of the royals. There was not a single person of any consequence to speak up for him, a outcome of all those years of presumption.

Royal Worries

The more astute family members recognized that. The primary concern is to hand down the monarchy, if not as previously at least complete and unblemished.

For generations the last 190 years trying to reverse the legacy of previous monarchs, demonstrating they are valuable, dutiful and reactive to their people.

Andrew was putting all that in peril in an age when deference and discretion is no longer adequate.

The Fallout

Finally, the notoriously hesitant sovereign was pressured more. There was little choice. The institution had surrendered command of the account.

Currently the loss of titles and the continued and permanent public humiliation that will pain Andrew the most.

  • Downgrading: Reduced to just a commoner
  • Past Example: The primary member to lose his honorifics in modern times
  • Naval Career: Notably painful given his role in the conflict

He continues to be a constitutional officer, theoretically able to act for the sovereign, and he is still eighth in line to the crown, but not any of these will actually happen.

Future Prospects

Do individuals he comes across still show respect to him? Will they still make mistakes and call him Prince? Might they say Mr,

Of course, he is not moving to suburbia, but to the monarchy's large estate at Sandringham.

In that place, he will be furnished by the monarch with one of the estate properties and given some form of financial support.

This differs from his former home, where he paid a nominal lease for more than 20 years, and the area is a bit remote, but even so it may not be far enough.

Pending Matters

This is not over. There are still files in the possession of overseas authorities to be disclosed.

  • Parliamentary Interest: Could legislators request additional information
  • Fiscal Review: Or examine the misuse of public money
  • Judicial Potential: There may even be a police investigation into his actions

Possibly for the time being the institutional damage to the monarchy is contained. The statement from the palace was evidently that the revocation of honorifics was what the monarch, and particularly other senior family members, desired.

A Shift in Position

No more deception that Andrew was acting willingly. And, remarkably, the brief announcement showed plainly that the institution were aligning with the complainant's narrative of events.

Furthermore, for the premiere occasion they eventually showed regard for the survivors: "The censures are deemed necessary, regardless of the truth that he continues to deny the accusations against him."

In the end it is presumption, self-interest and laziness that will destroy the monarchy. In his foolishness, self-gratification and venality, Andrew seems never to have understood that reality.
