Slot Asserts He Feels Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was natural for doubts to be asked about his future after another convincing defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their 9th loss in 12 games, representing the team's poorest run since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league champions on a tough night at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I am OK, I have got plenty of backing from above,” the coach remarked.
“It would be great to change things and secure a win of course but if you are coaching a team and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I accept my position. This isn't the initial instance I’ve been in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to expand on his conversations with the team officials, Slot said:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful for the squad and for me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “In the normal discussions I feel the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Persistent Problems and Squad Response
Slot expressed regret over familiar weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their Champions League defeat, specifically wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to everyone,” Jones said.
“It is not good enough. I don't have to wait to think about it. I’m past being angry internally. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He added, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Reds side enduring a phase like this with performances like these.”
Jones finished, “But we still have the emblem on our chest. And until it is removed, we will always fight.”
“Our aim is to get this team back to the top, show everyone again the values of this club and the reason it's called the best team in the world.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
