Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Getting rid of undesired presents might be seen as slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Auction
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 presents received by her by world leaders on official trips. This unusual assortment is said to contain items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
The presents, together, are worth an estimated €800,000. They will be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based art dealer. The specific date has not been finalized, although the aim is to hold the auction by year's end, with all funds raised donated to various charities.
Storage Room Treasures
These gifts reportedly kept in a storage room on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been gathering dust indefinitely.
The full gift list remains made public, but partial details emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was reviewed by officials. The discussion focused on whether a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.
An International Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Political Context
Meloni has been credited, mostly from within her party, with winning over foreign leaders and making Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale highlights a novel approach to manage the state presents that build up during a political career.
