Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
