Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A recent initialism emerged a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts like child health specialists. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, apparently, is what unity manifests as.

The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision turns 70 next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that initially championed peace has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
