766 and All That - When Cook Conquered Down Under
Alastair Cook's 766 runs scored by an English batsman during an Ashes series was only surpassed by cricket legend Wally Hammond
Brisbane is not a city to give the Three Lions badly required hope for the Ashes
In the wake of losing to Australia during the opening match, the tourists must stir themselves for a trip to the famous Gabba, a stadium where England have not won for over thirty years
Men wearing three lions have habitually been lambs to the slaughter at the Gabbatoir
A Shining Knight's Success
Among a recent history of broken English hopes, aspirations and players is a source of inspiration provided by an exceptional player
Today commemorates 15 years since Alastair Cook dominated in Brisbane through a defining 235 not out, saving the first Test from the 2010-11 series establishing England's trajectory to their only Ashes series win in Australia over nearly four decades
Unforgettable Series
This marked the start of Cook's triumphant Australian campaign; three centuries totaling 766 runs
Cricket great Hammond remains the sole English player with higher run totals during a Test series down under
Victory came 3-1, where each success by an innings
The team hasn't secured a Test here since that memorable series
Personal Reflections
"One tends to forget the challenging periods, the tension and worry that went into that," Cook recalls
"I reflect proudly. I played a significant part in a tournament that saw England triumphed 3-1 in Australia and all three games was achieved comprehensively"
Path to Success
His journey to down under success started a year and a half before following that year's Ashes in England
Though England triumphed, the opening batsman scored under 25 per innings with just one score over fifty
He sought improvement
"Cricket is a team game, personal performance creates the sensation that you must contribute adequately," he explains
Game Improvement
Just 48 hours following the victory celebrations, he returned hitting hundreds and hundreds of balls in the nets alongside Graham Gooch
Early outcomes proved positive
The batsman achieved three centuries on overseas campaigns in South Africa and Bangladesh
Pivotal Instances
When Cook returned to England for the 2010 summer, Cook performed poorly
Across eight appearances against Bangladesh and Pakistan, his top innings reached only 29
Without runs after the second day in the third match against Pakistan at The Oval, Cook believed he was playing his last Test innings before being dropped
"I was sitting in the bar, attempting to discover the answer by drowning sorrows," he admits
Decisive Instance
The 110-run innings guaranteed his seat in the squad down under
Preparation continued with two victories and one draw during preparatory contests on Australian soil
As the opening match began at the Gabba, they faced three wickets from Siddle
Record-Breaking Stand
Just before day three's conclusion, both batsmen opened England's second innings with a deficit of 221 runs
They reached 19-0 by day's end and proceeded through a demonstration etched in Ashes folklore
"I don't remember the messages, anything of what we spoke about," says Cook
Both left-handed batsmen contributed 188 in their partnership
Cook's 235 not out stood as the best performance by an Englishman in Australia since the 1930s
Total Command
England capitalised on an incredible start during the following Test at Adelaide
After Anderson also dismissed the Australian batsman, the hosts stood at 2-3 and struggled throughout
Cook followed up his Brisbane heroics by scoring 148 in a Test remembered for Kevin Pietersen dismantling the Australian attack
The Final Triumph
Victory was possible the series in Western Australia, only for Mitchell Johnson to preview the destruction from future encounters
The subsequent events included possibly England's finest day of Ashes cricket in Australia
In Melbourne, the 100,000-seater cathedral of sports down under, on the holiday, the home side were dismissed for 98
"If Carlsberg did Boxing Days, this was it. Amazement prevailed when play concluded," Cook remembers
Ultimate Success
Fuelled by the focus to win the urn, Cook excelled once more at the SCG
The 189-run innings contributed to England's 644, their record innings during Australian Tests
The question was not if victory would come both match and urn, but the timing
"The environment was electric," Cook remembers
"Following Tremlett's wicket of Michael Beer to claim triumph, it represented an instant of pure elation"
Legacy and Recognition
The batsman received top accolades
The remaining seven years of his cricket journey featured additional achievements
Following his international retirement, he received a knighthood for services to cricket
